Pegasus, our Spaulding 33, will be at the Strictly Sail Show at Jack London Square in Oakland from Wednesday April 15 to Sunday April 19. We’ll be in slip #73 in the Inner Center Basin between Kincaids and Il Pescatore restaurants.

Our volunteers will be representing the center, distributing brochures, selling t-shirts and caps and inviting the public to come to the center for a tour. Contact me if you want to be part of the show. We have free passes for our volunteers.

Polaris Haul Out

We are delighted to inform our members that we have raised the necessary funds to repair Polaris,  our 34-foot 1906 gaff-sloop.

In June of 2008, we noticed a small crack in her hull. After a thorough inspection, the Spaulding Board of Directors decided to stop sailing her. Since then, we have been raising funds to bring Polaris back to the Spaulding Center’s high standards.

Polaris has been the matriarch of our Public Sails Program. More than 120 young people, seniors and adult volunteers have sailed and crewed on her.

Following repairs, Polaris will be skippered by our Board President, Tom List, in the Master Mariners Regatta in May. She also will rejoin our Public Sails Program. The Spaulding Center would like to thank all the donors who made this possible.

Please stop by the Center to see Polaris under repair and to celebrate her continuing service with us.

Happy Birthday Wooden Boat Finder

birthdayhatsWooden Boat Finder, our free Web site for buyers and sellers of wooden boats, is one year old.

WBF has had over 86,000 visits in its first year. We aren’t directly involved in transactions on the site so we don’t know the results of all the ads, but many wooden boats have found homes thanks to WBF. The site is based on the very popular WordPress software, so participants can easily post their own ads or ask us for assistance.

The WBF was started because so many people approached us at the Spaulding Center either wanting to donate a boat to us, or asking us to buy and restore their beloved wooden boat. We obviously couldn’t handle all the requests but we wanted to help the wooden boats find a good home.

We’ve had boats on WBF not only from California, but Oregon, Washington, South Carolina, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Nova Scotia, Trinidad and Tobago, Netherlands and Turkey.

Boats on WBF have particpated in many ocean crossings, raced in the Transpac, Master Mariners Regatta and Pacific Cup and ferried prisoners to Alcatraz Island Federal Penitentiary.

We’ve also had famous boat designers represented, including Alden, Stephens, Garden, Winslow, Macgregor, Crocker, Hanna, Atkin and Speck.

Happy birthday to the Wooden Boat Finder!

Spaulding Center Launches Online Store

The Spaulding Center now has an online store. The store is located at http://store.spauldingcenter.org, or you can find a link to the store from our main Web site or from this blog.

The first offerings in our store are logoed t-shirts and caps as well as note cards with photos of Freda, the 1885 classic gaff sloop currently being restored at the Spaulding Center.

The store uses PayPal checkout, which takes payment in major credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, Discover and American Express), bank transfers and PayPal balance. If you prefer, you can mail a check to us or call us and pay by credit card over the phone.

You also can stop by and visit us in Sausalito during regular business hours and shop our store in person.
